What ages are eligible to participate in PYB?

Boys and girls in grades 2nd – 8th are eligible to participate in Portsmouth Youth Basketball.

Can you recommend an alternate program for my child who is in Kindergarten or Grade 1?

The Newport County YMCA offers an instructional program for children 4-5 years of age and 6-7 years of age. For more information visit their Web Site at www.newportymca.org.

Can I request a specific coach?

No, due to the number of participants and our commitment to balanced teams, we are not able to accommodate requests for specific coaches.

Can I request that my child be placed on a specific team with a friend?

With a commitment to trying to maintain balanced teams, friend requests will not be honored unless they are determined necessary by the Board. Siblings of the same sex in the same division will be placed on the same team. 

Is there a discount on the registration fee if I have multiple children participating in the program?

At this point we are not able to offer a discount for multiple children participating in the program, but hope to in the future.

What is the deadline for registration?

On-line and mail in registration closes Friday, November 23rd. In addition, each player must have a completed and paid Registration prior to the start of the season, December 1st. All Medical Release information on the registration form must be completed (one per child) prior to the player participating in the skills evaluation.

When are practices and games?

Each team in all divisions will have one practice per week lasting for approximately 1 to 1½ hours and will play in one game on Saturday. Schedules with practice information, game times and gym locations will be provided to the players upon team selection.

Can I volunteer to coach? Will there be training?

PYB relies on the enthusiastic participation of many volunteers to assist in coaching and managing each team. PYB is looking for experienced coaches, but will also provide coaching resources and training to dedicated volunteers. Each coach will be given specific information on the drills and skills to teach their players during the season to ensure consistency across all teams within the league. Coaching tools will include a coach’s manual, sample practice plans and a coach's clinic sponsored by the league in November.

How do I volunteer to coach?

If you have a love for the game of basketball and enjoy working with young people, PYB encourages you to complete our Volunteer Form. Please note, each application will be subject to a background check and will be reviewed by the volunteer review board prior to being assigned to a team.

What does the league registration fee cover?

Each player will be given a game jersey as part of their registration fee. In addition, each player registered in PYB will be eligible to participate in a skills competition at the end of the season (more information to follow). The league registration fee offsets costs associated with facilities, equipment, uniforms, insurance and officials.

Will there be a snack sign-up sheet for after games?

No, PYB will not provide or sponsor a parent sign-up for snacks to be distributed after each practice or game due to facility rules, food allergies and to keep the focus on basketball.

How can I contribute or donate to PYB?

PYB is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to introducing the sport of basketball to the youth of Portsmouth. Contributions and donations are vital to insure the success of PYB and offset costs associated with facilities, equipment, insurance and officials. If you are interested in contributing a donation to PYB, please contact a member of our board or complete the PYB Donation Form
