League Information

General Information
Portsmouth Youth Basketball (PYB) was formed in 2007 with the goal of teaching fundamental basketball skills to boys and girls, grades 2nd – 8th, in a positive environment of teamwork and sportsmanship. The program will run from December 1st through March 29th, with no games or practices running the weeks of the town of Portsmouth school vacation.

For the 2007-2008 season Portsmouth Youth Basketball will consist of three divisions. Each division is formed based on grade level (not age). Two Saturdays of skills evaluation will “jump start” the season in December consisting of a general practice and a game. The teams will then be formed based on the result of the skills evaluation. The skills evaluation is not a “try-out”, it is a tool to help PYB balance the skill level of players within each team.

Rookies (Grades 2nd & 3rd): The Rookies division is co-ed with an emphasis on basic basketball fundamentals. Teams will practice one evening during the week for 1 to 1 1/2 hours and play one game on Saturday.

NCAA (Grades 4th & 5th): The NCAA division will be divided into gender specific teams. Both the boy and girl teams will practice one evening during the week for 1 to 1 1/2 hours and play one game on Saturday.

NBA (Grades 6th, 7th & 8th): The NBA division will be divided into gender specific teams. Both the boy and girl teams will practice one evening during the week for 1 to 1 1/2 hours and play one game on Saturday.

The primary communication method to get information to you from PYB will be by e-mail. When registering your child, please be certain to provide an accurate and up to date e-mail address so you can receive the most up to date information.

Registration
The registration fee for the 2007-2008 season will be as follows:

The preferred method of registration for PYB is by using the on-line registration feature. Please locate the menu option “Registration” from the left menu or follow the link to the right - Register On-Line. If you would like to pay by check, please download the Registration and Medical Release form and send it with your payment to Portsmouth Youth Basketball, PO Box 171, Portsmouth, RI 02871. A date for an on-site, “walk-in” registration will be announced if needed during the month of November.

Each player must have a completed and paid registration prior to the start of the season, December 1st. In addition, all medical release information must be completed on the registration form (one per child) prior to the player participating in the skills evaluation week.

Fees & Equipment
Each player will be given a game jersey which is included in the registration fee. In addition, each player registered in PYB will be eligible to participate in a skills competition at the end of the season (more information to follow). PYB registration fees also help to offset costs associated with facilities, equipment, insurance and officials.  

Please have your child bring a basketball (please see size chart below), water bottle, dress in comfortable gym clothing and wear basketball sneakers.

Important Dates

Practices & Games
Each team in all divisions will have one practice per week lasting for approximately between 1 and 1½ hours and will play in one game on Saturday. Schedules with practice information, game times and gym locations will be provided to the players upon team selection.

Gym Locations
Gym locations for practices and games will include the Portsmouth High School Gyms and The Pennfield School. Due to limited gym space, these locations and practice length may change due to scheduling constraints. Once a schedule is finalized, you will be notified of your gym location for practices and games.

Volunteer Opportunities
PYB relies on the enthusiastic participation of many volunteers to assist in coaching and managing each team. If you have a love for the game of basketball and enjoy working with young people, PYB encourages you to complete our Volunteer Form. PYB is looking for experienced coaches, but will also provide coaching resources and training to dedicated volunteers.

Not a coach? PYB is looking for volunteers to help in all aspects of the league. If you are interested in volunteering your time, please complete the Volunteer Form and a member of the PYB Board will contact you.

Team Pictures
Picture days for the 2007-2008 Season have been scheduled for Thursday, January 24th and Saturday, January 26th. Information and picture forms will be distributed to teams prior to pictures. Photos will be delivered to the players by each coach when the order is complete.

Contributions & Donations
PYB is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to teaching the fundamentals of basketball to the youth of Portsmouth. Contributions and donations are vital to insure the success of PYB and offset costs associated with facilities, equipment, insurance and officials.
