What ages are eligible to participate in PYB?
Boys and girls in grades 2nd – 8th are eligible to participate in Portsmouth Youth Basketball.
Can you recommend an alternate program for my child who is in Kindergarten or Grade 1?
The Newport County YMCA offers an instructional program for children 4-5 years of age and 6-7 years of age. For more information visit their Web Site at www.newportymca.org.
Can I request a specific coach?
No, due to the number of participants and our commitment to balanced teams, we are not able to accommodate requests for specific coaches.
Can I request that my child be placed on a specific team with a friend?
With a commitment to trying to maintain balanced teams, friend requests will not be honored unless they are determined necessary by the Board. Siblings of the same sex in the same division will be placed on the same team.
Is there a discount on the registration fee if I have multiple children participating in the program?
Yes, Registration for your 1st Player is $175, 2nd Player $150, 3rd Player $125, and the 4th Player is free.
What is the deadline for registration?
Registration closes November 15th. Each player must have a completed and paid Registration prior to the start of the season. All Medical Release information on the registration form must be completed (one per child) prior to the player participating.
PLEASE NOTE: NO REFUNDS WILL BE GRANTED UPON COMPLETION OF 1 PRACTICE AND 1 GAME. ANY REFUND REQUEST MUST BE APPROVED BY THE PYB BOARD.
When are practices and games?
Each team in all divisions will have one practice per week lasting for approximately 1 hour and will play in one game on Saturday. Schedules with practice information, game times, and gym locations will be provided to the players upon team selection.
What equipment is required? Are there any restrictions?
PYB will supply each coach with pinnies and basketballs for practices and games. Each player can bring their own basketball to practice if they desire. Please do not bring your basketball to games, the PYB provided basketballs are enough to warm up on game days. Each player should wear sneakers that are non-marking. Basketball sneakers are preferred for safety of the player. PYB follows Rhode Island Basketball Officials Association rules related to player safety such as casts, piercings, bracelets, etc.
What size basketball should I purchase my child?
Rookies: 27.5 Instructional Size Ball
NCAA (Boys & Girls), Jr. NBA & WNBA Girls: 28.5 Women’s Regulation/Intermediate Size Ball
Jr. NBA Boys & NBA Boys: 29.5 Men’s Regulation Size Basketball
Can I volunteer to coach? Will there be training?
PYB relies on the enthusiastic participation of many volunteers to assist in coaching and managing each team. PYB is looking for experienced coaches, but will also provide coaching resources and training to dedicated volunteers.
How do I volunteer to coach?
If you have a love for the game of basketball and enjoy working with young people, PYB requires you to complete our an online background check form. Please note, each application will be reviewed by the volunteer review board prior to being assigned to a team.
What does the league registration fee cover?
The league registration fee offsets costs associated with facilities (gym rentals), equipment, uniforms, insurance, and officials. Each player will be issued a reversible jersey as part of their registration fee to be returned at the end of the season. In addition, each player registered in PYB will be eligible to participate in playoffs at the end of the season (more information to follow).
How can I contribute or donate to PYB?
PYB is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to introducing the sport of basketball to the youth of Portsmouth. Contributions and donations are vital to insure the success of PYB and offset costs associated with facilities, equipment, insurance and officials.
