PYB Code of Conduct
Portsmouth Youth Basketball’s mission is to teach fundamental basketball skills to children, grades 2nd – 8th in a positive environment of teamwork and sportsmanship. Youth sports programs play a vital role in promoting the physical, social, and emotional development of children. It is therefore essential for parents, coaches, and spectators to encourage youth athletes to embrace the values of good sportsmanship. Moreover, adults involved in youth sports events should be models of good sportsmanship and should lead by example by demonstrating fairness, respect, and self-control.
I therefore pledge to be responsible for my words and actions while attending, coaching, or participating in a youth sports event and shall conform my behavior to the following code of conduct:
- I will be a positive role model for children and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy to all players, coaches, spectators, referees, and staff at every game, practice, or league event.
- I will not engage in or encourage my child, or any other person, to engage in unsportsmanlike conduct with any coach, parent, player, participant, referee, or any other attendee.
- I will not engage in or encourage my child, or any other person, to engage in any behavior that would endanger the health, safety or wellbeing of any coach, parent, player, participant, referee, or any other attendee.
- I will not use drugs or alcohol while at a youth sports event and will not attend, coach, or participate in a youth sports event while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- I will not permit my child, or encourage any other person, to use drugs or alcohol at a youth sports event and will not permit my child, or encourage any other person, to attend, coach, or participate in a youth sports event while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- I will not engage or encourage my child, or any other person, to engage in the use of profanity.
- I will treat and encourage my child to treat any coach, parent, player, participant, referee, or any other attendee with respect regardless of race, creed, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, or ability.
- I will not engage or encourage my child to engage in verbal or physical threats or abuse aimed at any coach, parent, player, participant, referee, or any other attendee.
- I will not initiate a fight or scuffle or encourage my child, or any other person, to initiate a fight or scuffle with any coach, parent, player, participant, referee, or any other attendee.
I hereby agree that if I fail to conform my conduct to the foregoing while attending, coaching, or participating in a youth sports event I will be subject to disciplinary action, including but not limited to the following in any order or combination:
- Verbal warning issued by the PYB Board.
- Written warning issued by the PYB Board.
- Suspension or immediate ejection issued by the PYB Board.
- Suspension from multiple PYB events issued by the PYB Board.
- Season suspension or multiple season suspension issued by the PYB Board.
Rules:
- All Technical Fouls are reported to the PYB Board at info@PortsmouthYouthBasketball.com and on the game scoresheet.
- Spectators must remain on the opposite side or the ends of the court and away from the score table, benches, players, and coaches.
- Only the Head or Assistant coach has authority to speak with the score table or referee.
- Referees and PYB Board members have the authority to declare a game a forfeit due to unsportsmanlike conduct or a concern for player safety.
Disciplinary Actions:
- Player: 1 Technical Foul = removal from the game for the remainder of current quarter or overtime period
- Player: 2 Accumulated* Technical Fouls = 1 game suspension
- Player: 3 Accumulated* Technical Fouls = Season suspension
- Coach: 1 Technical = Disciplinary review by PYB board
- Coach: 2 Accumulated* Technical Fouls = 1 game suspension
- Coach: 3 Accumulated* Technical Fouls = Season suspension
- Any individual ejected from a game must leave the premises and will be subject to a weeklong or greater suspension from all PYB activities.
- Any physical fight will result in a suspension for the remainder of the season.
- A second physical fight will result in a suspension for the following season or an indefinite suspension depending upon severity.
- The PYB Board retains authority to discipline players, coaches, and spectators for violations of the Code. Discipline may include suspension from house and/or travel games and possible expulsion from the league for repeated or flagrant violations.
